Paper describes a practical goal programming application for cyclical shift scheduling of nurses at Somaiya hospital, Mumbai, India. The problem was formulated with constraints of shift times, hospital policy, nurses' preferences etc. and solved by regular LP and after identifying LP limitations, by GP with hard and soft constraints. This work has given us an opportunity to take the technique to the industry and make them understand the benefits of using advanced techniques to solve complex problems.
